Personally, I would go back to Ancient Rome or Greece. In even a time of war and bloodshed, it does seem rather fascinating with new engineering and discoveries they did.

I'd say yes, only if it's realistic. Don't make it so far-fetched that it's almost like fantasy. But I think past is more fun.

I recommend you read Plato's The Republic. For all the information in that book, the one thing I learned most from it is how little people in society have actually changed. It really makes you think about what life is,has been and could be. It won't actually take you back in time, but you may feel like it's close enough.

Also, The Punic Wars by Nigel Bagnall. It has some interesting views into that era, where the romans and carthaginians fought until Carthage's demise.. Sadly, during the second punic war, the romans slew archimedes at syracuse during looting and pillaging. Such a great mind to lose at a whim.

If anything, I'd rather not go back in time. It'd be great and all, but I'd always wonder what I'm missing now. History is never more fun than when you're making it.

The viking age, in Norway, just around the spot where I live, since there was once a Viking town here called "Kaupang". It was one of the biggest towns in scandinavia, and I', just really interested about how everything was back then.
