I know I've already hinted at a lot of this stuff in my gallery, but I figured at this point I might as well just make a separate topic for it since it is growing rather quickly.
ALL THE ARTWORK SHOW HERE IS PURELY CONCEPT WORK. NONE OF THIS REPRESENT ANY PART OF A FUNCTIONAL VIDEO GAME OR DEMO.
A while back I had an idea to create a mock-up of a video game called Jaunt. It would follow a young man as he adventured through a vast world fighting monsters and collecting treasures. I did a quick design for the first town, and it looked terrible- I might post a bit of the old stuff if anybody cares to see it by comparison.
About half a year later I went back to the idea, and started again graphically from scratch. This time I approached the style of the game as a classic Gameboy game, inspired greatly by the original Pokemon and LoZ games. The game is rendered in only the original 4 shades that a GB could produce, and the world is broken up into individual 256,256 areas (slightly larger than the actual dimensions of the GB screen to keep things from looking cramped).
Here is a concept of how the title would've looked-
The strange pillar in the center is called a Jaunt Stone. Basically they are ancient relics left by a forgotten race, and your character accidentally absorbs some of that race's powers and can once again activate them. Once they are activated you can use them to teleport from one stone to another. Every major town will have one, so basically they are the fast travel system of the game. In fact, you should be able to find them rather easily in the two towns I posted below.
The very first overworld town, you would start the game in the small patch of houses in the lower left corner-
Another concept city that isn't completed yet, most likely the 2nd one you would visit-
And lastly the main character, the girl he loves, and a dog... because everybody loves dogs!
As I said above this is all just concept art, and I have no plans to code the game- mostly because I am terrible at coding, and all the stuff I'd like to add if far beyond your average game-making program. If Jaunt could actually be made I'd love to see a game with modern RPG elements, equitable items and weapons, sidequests, and an emphasis on exploration, all presented in GB era graphics. So pretty much it would be a game with a modern feel but an oldschool look.
Any comments, suggestions?
