Well as the title suggests, this new launcher and jar file, version thing has confused, befuddled and derailed all of my attempts to install modloader and optifine. However, I don't wish to download magic launcher, so I just need someone with a bit of knowhow to help me out with why I can't seem to install them. Thanks!

I've got optifine installed, but not mod loader. I can give you a list of steps to do in a little while, if I remember all of them. Installing mods manually is definitely more annoying than before though.

[edit]
1. Go into your minecraft folder (search %appdata% and it'll be in Roaming\.minecraft), go into the version folder.
2. Create a new folder. Mine's called 1.6.2_Optifine. I'm not sure the name entirely matters here, but make it descriptive at least, because it will matter below.
3. Go into the new folder.
4. Create a new text file, use notepad. It needs to have no style or formatting attached to it, just plain text. In this file, put the following (note that spacing isn't important):
{ "id": "foldername" }
Save it as foldername.json (you may need to unhide file extensions and remove the .txt that windows will append to the file on some machines, just make sure the full file name matches the folder name and ends with .json). Close the file.
5. Paste a copy of minecraft 1.6.2 jar in this same folder, rename it to have the folder name with .jar at the end.
6. Open the jar with winrar (or winzip or whatever). Paste the optifine classes in there.
7. Go into the assets, then minecraft folders in the jar and optifine files.
8. Paste the mcpatcher and optifine folders from the optifine files into the jar.
9. Close all the things.
10. Run the mc launcher.
11. At the launcher screen, on the top right side, click edit profile. Under Use version, choose your modded jar. (you could also set up a new profile for this I suppose, but I never plan to use an unmodded version).
12. Click save profile.
13. Click play. I think I needed to load the game once, quit and then run it again for the mods to take proper effect, don't entirely remember. The json file you created will get populated with a tonne more data after running.

It's entirely possible I'm forgetting something in the above. As always, make backups before you break things in my name.

As for putting more mods in there, I'm sure there's no issue with it so long as you put files where they're supposed to be.

Since cheaty's only managed to get optifine, Ill run you through getting optifine and forge. (I know its not modloader, but it has modloader built in).
  1. Go to http://files.minecraftforge.net/ and download the recommended 1.6.2 installer.
  2. Run it and select your minecraft directory. (should auto detect unless you've switched locations)
  3. Download the latest optifine from the 1.5.2 minecraft forum page
  4. Download the latest magic launcher and click 'Setup'
  5. Click the 'add' button and select the optifine .zip
  6. Click the 'advanced' tab underneath the minecraft.jar box
  7. In the parameters, enter this: "-Dfml.ignorePatchDiscrepancies=true"
  8. Hit run! everything should work correctly.

Huh. So You're looking to install OptiFine and ModLoader?
Here's the Deal.
I use a program called Multi Minecraft, or as it's more commonly known, MultiMC. It's similar to the Magic Launcher but different.
After downloading it and doing various other things (if you need dat, go on YouTube and search up an installation tutorial for MultiMC,) you'll want to go into your MultiMC folder and double-click the .exe. Then, it'll open up the launcher. Go Up to the Upper Left Corner and click "Create A New Instance." Instance basically stands for Version. Upon clicking it, a little window will open with self-explanatory things. (P.S. Some MCRewind versions, if they're far back enough, have problems with the patches it downloads upon creating them. Dunno Why.) Anyway, if all goes well, then it'll download the .jars and all of those things. Right click your New Instance (Version) and then left-click "Edit Mods." In this window, there's a download button for Minecraft Forge, which isn't Modloader, but as tnmjimbob says, it is way better. Then download just OptiFine from the MC Forums thread, listed here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic...b4-fps-boost-hd-textures-aa-af-and-much-more/

There are multiple versions, including Light, Standard, and Ultra. The choice is up to you, but I recommend Ultra if you have a decent computer build, because then you can get into truly amazing things like Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic...rs-unbelievable-shaders-and-glsl-shaders-mod/) and incredibly high resolution texture packs. we're talking like 512 by 512 in a select few cases. If your computer is decent, but lacks a little bit in memory, GPU (Graphics Processing Unit, i.e. Graphics Card,) or CPU (Central Processing Unit, i.e. your Motherboard,) then get Standard, which will still work for probably 99.9% mods out there, but some of the aforementioned things are incompatible with it. If you have a really crappy laptop or baby computer like my old one that takes like 30 seconds to start up and barely plays Minecraft proper, then get Light. It works with even lesser mods still but you will see a tremendous amount of FPS increase. 20 fps increase and above is common.
After Installing OptiFine, go to your Windows downloads if you're using Windows Vista, 7, or 8, and drag your downloaded zipped folder or, in some mods, .jar file, to your Desktop. Then, open up your MultiMC folder again (I recommend dragging it onto your Desktop at some point or another,) and go into the folder called mods. Your downloaded Minecraft Forge via the button on the little window mentioned earlier should already be there. Drag OptiFine in as well, then go back. Activate the .exe and right-click your instance, selecting "Edit Mods" again. Your Minecraft Forge is there, but not OptiFine. Left click the "Add" button, which will take you to your mods folder. Double click OptiFine, and just click ok on everything.

That's it! Double click your instance (version) and login to experience the pure joy.

P.S. That was a mouthful. :p
