Gameplay:
The gameplay for this is amazing. It isn't quite as good in some areas as say, Donkey Kong Country 2 was, but for Retro's first platformer, this is amazing. The animal friends are mostly missing, except Ramby. Who in all honesty, has some of the best levels in this game. Or maybe its just because I liked animal friends. Either way, moving on, like the originals this included the annoyasheck cart levels. Honestly I never found these enjoyable in any donkey kong country, but in certain cases DKCR actually made them fun, which is quite nice. There also rocket levels, which, in my opinion, the horizontal versions of these are just flat out not fun. The vertical versions at least provide a challenge that looks possible. But all in all, they still had good designs. The game is fantastic until you get to world 8. Bad level design takes place in quite a few of those levels, even though it does hold some gems. I'll try not to spoil anything, but for reference, I haven't beaten the golden banana temple thing. That's after the main story for people that don't know. But as an extra, like the original 3, this keeps a lot of secrets. Which is great for replaying.
Story:
While not astounding, its creative and fun. And honestly, its a game about animals that can't even talk. You expected an amazing story?
Graphics:
Unlike one two and three, this did not use pre-rendered graphics. And that's a great thing. The game has a lot of atmosphere and puts a lot detail into backgrounds ect. Its a lot more cinematic then the others, the graphics are great for that. Also its in widescreen. And widescreen is great.
Final Score:
Overview:
It's awesome. That's it. Go buy it. Now.
Side Note:
The music in the game is outstanding. Just, fantastic.

History:
Back in November of 1994, a brand new platformer from Rare and Nintendo was released. It's name, was Donkey Kong Country. It had pre-rendered graphics (Which at the time was cool), and could be played with two people (2 player contest, and a switch whenever one player would die.) It was highly praised and high praise it deserved. It was very challenging, but gave you a sense of accomplishment. It had 2 sequels, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (Which is considered to be on of the greatest platformers of all time), and the less well received but still good, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. After a 14 year absence, and Rare being sold to microsoft, a new Donkey Kong game arose, Donkey Kong Country Returns, developed by one of my favorite companies, Retro Studios.
Review:
At the time when I got this for my birthday in 2010 I wasn't a big Donkey Kong fan even owning the original 3. It wasn't until after I got into the original 3 I could truly review this with some comparing. Here goes.Gameplay:
