Right, new idiot in town (or at least at its perimeter)

Heips folkses! I'm a minecraft noob but a pretty wickedly enthusiastic one. Hope to learn a lot from you guys and girls and end up building some things of fabulousness.

One question right off the bat, though - when I portaled in to my city (I'm in Primus) right at the very opening of my game, I was rather cruelly jumped by two spiders before I realised where I was, and was dead mighty fast. So since then I've been spawning at the spawn point, naturally, and I've never really seen the inside of my "home" city. Any way to get in there that doesn't involve an ugly 1x1 tower near the city walls?!?
