Why does shit like this get popular?
I want to bet that if I do a belly flop on an deserted train track it becomes some shitmeme like "Belly Flop on Train Trop lol yoloswag#420" :L
There are some things I completely question how they get popular.

Then, there are some things that I just laugh and go with it.

This, is one of those fads, where I laugh and go with it and will soon participate in it.

I was going to come in here and pee all over your fun, but it seems Shiny has done it first. Oh well.

With the ever-expanding influence of gimmicky dance moves, actual hiphop artists have began speaking out against them.

These are actual rappers speaking out against the commercialization of the genre. This type of music and dance were meant to be empowering, and now it's becoming a disgrace to African Americans. They use blackface, a practice that dehumanized African Americans for decades, to illustrate their point. But instead of white people dehumanizing them, these are black people doing it to themselves for money. And do also note that Harlem, the place of the Harlem Renaissance in which African Americans contributed and created music, literature, and culture has nothing to do with the Harlem Shake. All in all, it's disgraceful.

And I don't mean to deny you your fun. I just ask you to look at the implications.

tl;dr Harlem Shake is stupid and rude.

I posted it because I thought it was funny and I didn't think it further than that. But if that's your opinion I'm fine with it.

I said it once before, but I'll post it here;

I actually think Harlem Shake is cool, which is why I enjoy the videos. I enjoy the randomness of it, and think I could actually make some potential out of it with my own drawing techniques. That doesn't mean you have to enjoy it, and I don't see why you would, as everyone has their own state of opinion.

... But why would you go on a thread named Harlem Shake if you dislike Harlem Shake?

Things get popular, even for the wrong purposes. It all dies down after a while, so I don't see it as much of a problem, anyway.
