My best advice would be to seek a membership with Adamantium, a fortified villages literally right by spawn. Looking down one of the spawntown paths, there is also a tunnel marked by an enderchest that leads underground, with a path branching into an End route and a Nether route. The Nether route leads down to a portal, through which you can find a path on which portals belonging to a number of friendly factions.

In hindsight, why did you build a house so close to spawn?

Because i was building it at the other end of the map and every time i died for whatever reason i had to walk for ages to get back... which is not fun either...

I believe destroying simply one block of wood and killing three sheeps to make a bed isn't that hard either, especially with the implementation of pokemobs in the server.
