Hey all! As you know, Buildbox 2.0 has been announced, and this thread will serve to hopefully answer some questions you may have, as well as act to update you on the progress of it towards its release.
.
  • What is Buildbox 2.0?
    • Buildbox 2.0 is an upcoming "re-introduction" of the current build server.
      .
  • "Re-introduction"?
    • We plan to start the server off pretty much fresh, transferring over only what we feel is absolutely necessary.
      .
  • Why?
    • Buildbox is at the point now where we feel that enough things are broken it has enough outdated pieces to it and would benefit greatly from starting fresh. To be frank, the server as it currently stands is pretty jumbled, and instead of trying to go piece by piece repairing it, a new server will be the most beneficial for its users.
      .
  • Okay, what's going to stay the same?
    • For the large majority, Buildbox will still "feel the same" in normal use. However, it is our hope that by starting with a clean slate, the server will be more stable, less bugged version of its former self. The current Plots and AdvPlots worlds will transfer over as-is, and players will not be required to start a new plot. Other than that, everything will be wiped! Rest assured, as always, freebuild worlds will be available for download on the forums.
      .
  • Will I keep my rank?
    • Ranks will work as follows:
      • All Builders will be demoted to player, and stricter requirements will be put in place to be promoted to builder. This is due to a desire for greater "quality assurance" and an overall increase in the classiness of Buildbox. These requirements are still in development, and everyone will be notified when we finalize our plans for Builder requirements. Please note that we will consider a player's old builds (provided that you have screen shots or schematics of them) for their Builder promotion, but remember that these builds will be held to the "stricter requirements" for Builder.
      • Advanced Builders will keep their ranks and will not need to reapply. We will be evaluating the current requirements for AdvBuilder, though no decision has been made as to whether we will raise the requirements as well.
      • Operators will keep their rank, as long as Prizyms and I feel that you are staffing to the standard that is upheld around other Blocktopia servers. Staff who we feel may not be "up-to-scratch" will receive a PM in the coming weeks notifying them of what we expect, and given a chance to "step up" into the position.
        .
  • What, specifically, is going to start from scratch?
    • Plugins will be evaluated, and replaced/tossed if deemed necessary. Permissions will be written from scratch. Flatland, Terrain, and MechWorld will be wiped and will restart with larger protected spawn areas. The entire server will be "new", with only plotworlds and some ranks transferring over.
      .
  • Sounds great! When can we expect BB2.0 to go live?
    • I don't have an ETA yet - the server will be released when all the bugs have been worked out and the server runs smoothly. I'm not keen on released a half-done server - the whole point of this re-introduction is to have a clean start to Blocktopia's build server, and releasing a buggy, broken server wouldn't be a clean start!
.
I'll make sure to keep this thread updated with progress on the development - as always, you may come to me, @Prizyms, or post in this thread with any questions or suggestions you may have!
.
.

PS: MidiRadio has just been updated with a handful of Classic Disney songs - go check it out!

The Operators will have to get their riot gear ready and build a fort in preparation for the riots that will happen when the Builders get demoted back to Player!

In all seriousness -- this refresh to the server is needed. Hopefully crashes will be nonexistent when a player decides to clear their whole plot or World Edit something large. And I truly agree that building standards need to go way up. Maybe we could rival other creative servers once those standards have been met? Also, large spawn protected areas! \o/

It's within my best interests to make the AdvPlot world something really special, and there will be a few undecided incentives to consistently building to a very high standard. Perhaps we could even get on the front page of /r/Minecraft a few times, who knows?

This is definitely what BuildBox needs...

QUESTION: Will the Ops remain able to give the Builder rank via the Server, or will a forum application be required? You said "quality ensurance," and having a forum account usually means you're an active, contributing member of the server...

I actually think that it wouldn't be a bad idea to require players to post Builder applications on the forums.
  • It would let the players and staff know who's applying and what they actually built.
  • It could be use as reference material when the accepted players apply for the Adv Builder rank so then the staff could see if they improved their building skills/style.
  • And maybe the staff could use the voting system used in Adv Builder applications for the Builder applications -- and perhaps Adv Builders can vote in these Builder applications? That way, Adv Builders can use their rank to vouch for other player ranks when they want to apply for Builder.
I'm just tossing in suggestions, so feel free butcher them if you don't like it.

Sounds good, but- I get demoted to player again? :c
Don't mean to sound whiney about, just a bit annoying.
The overall quality of those holding a builder rank has dropped significantly in the past 6ish months. This is largely on my shoulders, by not giving clear-cut expectations to my own staff as to what is worthy of this rank. Because of this, Prizyms and I feel that it would be best to start fresh with builders given a new, explicitly explained expectation (heh) of what holding a Builder rank ought to entail. This will be a bit of a process - both on our end and the user's end - but we feel that once we get through it, the result will be a much classier Buildbox.

please no apply on forums for builder. i feel applying on forums should be for staff. it brings attention to them, builders do not need that much attention, because they wont be in charge of anything. this brings attention to that these players should get more respect. that may just be even more demening for players

--Merged to prevent double posting

but, thats just my 2 cents.

The forums shouldn't be staff-application-only. Builders should get as much attention as AdvBuilders, Operators, Players and Nill Directors.
After all, If Nillbox Buildbox V2.0 is classier than Not-Nillbox The current Buildbox then Its nillbox you idiot Buildbox V2.0 builder apps should DEFINITELY be on the forums so multiple staff members can rate your build and discuss it.

For example, Build a giant statue of nill and smash 5000 dollars in his face and you get builder.
Tough now in Buildbox V2.0 MULTIPLE staff members have to rate on the forums you have to pay multiple sums of money instead of one the staff members can discuss and come to an agreement overtime instead of 1 staff having to give his opinion on the spot.

It also fixes the problems that some players go and whine at another Op's doorstep because the other one didn't like his build.

Therefore i give the builder apps on the site a +1 (See what i did there? c: )

EDIT: How is this confusing Aperson? ._.

Well, its a bit discontinuous, and all the crossowers and caps doesnt make it any better, In general kinda confusing and hard to really see what you are actually trying to say.

To be honest, I don't really understand why applications should be staff-only, but I do feel that with a rank like Builder, which is, after all, pretty common, the staff are gonna have a lot more work to do. The applications would likely clutter the rank application board, so unless you're gonna be that much stricter about who's getting Builder and who's not, I wouldn't want to see the Builder rank application-based.

Well my biggest guess would be that applications WOULD be much stricter.
