The Guardian of Light & Flight

[CONTINUATION OF FLASHBACK]
The boy wakes up and looks around. Where is he again? He throws the blanket off him and sits up, his chest bare. He looks at the clock. "10 AM..." he mutters to himself as he stands up and walks to the kitchen.

She wakes to sunlight shining through the window, splotchy from the leaves blocking it out. Rolling over, she pulls her blanket over her head. It's too comfortable, and she doesn't want to move... At least not right now.

The boy rummages through the cupboards and grabs a cup. He looks through the drawers. "Where does she keep her coffee..." he mumbles to himself. As he envisions throwing the steaming cup in the girl's face. He shakes his head. "God damnit..."

Hearing a clatter in the kitchen, she finally makes herself sit up and glares at the door. The... Closed, and securely locked, door. She wants to trust him, but with everything against him...

He finds a small box. There's a small label reading "Airis" taped to the lid. He opens it to find it filled with coffee powder and some filters. He grabs a filter and puts some water into the boiler.

She sighs, standing and stretching. There's no real point in staying in her room all day, so she quickly gets dressed in shorts and a t-shirt and goes out into the hall.

He hears her in the hall as he grabs a cup and puts some powder in the filter and pours the coffee through it.

"How do you feel?" She pulls a chair back from the table and sits down, watching the back of his head expectantly.

He turns around. The cup of coffee in his hands. Perfect opportunity to throw it in her face. Watch her scream in pain and agony. Why isn't he doing it? "Fine, I guess." he says as he takes a sip and burns his tongue.

"Is that closer to 'all better' or 'I might start bleeding out again sometime soon'?" She raises her eyebrows as he winces.

'Why don't I show it to you on your own body?'... he sighs. "Inbetween." as he passes the cup from one hand to the other. 'What kind of steroids is her boiler on?' he thinks to himself.

'I thought he was like me... Was I wrong? If he was, he'd be in much better shape...' She thinks, watching him fidget with the mug in his hands.

He looks at the girl "Did you sleep well?" he asks. 'Why the fuck do you care? Just fucking burn the twat already' a voice in his head says.

She shrugs. "Well enough. Did that-" she gestures at his chest- "Bother you at all?"

He looks to his left. "Of course it did. I got stabbed fifteen times in the chest..." he says, "Where is the toilet?" he puts down his cup.

Now she winces. 'Wrong question...' Standing, she walks back through the living room. "This way."

He follows her through the living room.

"In here." She nudges the door open. "I'm sure you can find your way back to the kitchen."

He walks in, closes and locks the door.

Multiple loud bangs are heard on the front door as a few voices yell "OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR!"

She jumps, banging her elbow on the counter. "What's going on...?" she mumbles to herself, starting towards the door so she can see what's happening.

One of the door hinges bends slightly as they knock harder and harder on the door. "WE SAID OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR!"

'Whoever it is... They're violent.' Taking care to stay out of sight of the windows, she creeps closer to the door. 'Better question, how did they even get up here?'

One of the hinges of the door flies off and the knocking stops. Two seconds later a blade slashes trough the door, stopping mere inches from Alouette's face.

She gasps almost inaudibly, stumbling back. 'I can't stay here... I have to hide..!'

The door breaks down as an angry mob, armed with kitchen knifes, fire axes, fire extinguishers and everything sharp or blunt they could find. The 7 persons immediately start scouring the house as a tall boy, grabs Alouette by the neck and pins her to the wall. "Where the fuck is he?!"

"W-what are you doing here?!" She gasps, eyes wide, trying to pry his hands from her throat. "How did you get here?!"

The boy pushes her harder against the wall "I fucking asked something you bitch!" he raises his hand to slap her when another boy, around Alouette's age prevents him from doing so. "That's not going to work, Jean."

Meanwhile in the bathroom Light finishes and flushes "The fuck am I hearing?"

The tall boy lets her go as the other one grabs her hand and pulls her close. "Why don't you just tell us?" he asks her.

Her eyes harden, and she grits her teeth, digging her nails into his wrists and slipping out of his grip. Darting past both of them, she absconds back to her bedroom, slamming and locking the door behind her. Luckily, none of them had gotten there yet...

The boy walks out of the toilet when he sees Alouette darts past him. He looks into the living room as the boys are walking around, he runs after Alouette but she slams the door shut before he could reach her room. He softly knocks on her door as one person walks out of the kitchen. "Alouette? What's going on?" he whispers through the door.

"And here I thought I'd never need it... Must be psychic or something." She mutters, pulling a gun from behind the headboard of her bed. She tucks it under her arm and yanks the door open, determined to go down fighting.

He looks at Alouette as the door opens "Ah you're okay, The fuck is goi-" his eyes lighten up as he sees the shotgun.

"There's some people that broke into my house... I somewhat doubt they'd get out if I asked nicely." She glares past him, her voice low.

He grabs the shotgun from under her arm, points it up and lowers the pump, making a loud noise through the entire house. "I think they'd do it for Mr. 12-gauge here." he says, grinning.

She smiles in relief. "Glad to see you're well enough to help."

"It's a gun. They make everything so much easier." he grins as he points it down the hallway.

"I suppose they do." She smiles back, following his gaze. "Now, where'd they go..."

He closes one of his eyes, looking down the iron sights as he slowly walks towards the living room.

When they arrive the two boys are fighting: "No! I'll ask her for a date! You hit her!" "She doesn't want a botherer like you. She'll pick me for sure!"

"Gentlemen, gentlemen. There is no need to fight here. We can solve this argument fair and square." he says as he walks towards the boys, aiming the shotgun at them.

"Presumptuous assholes." Alouette growls, storming past him. "Now listen," she says, mock sweetness in her voice, "We can do this the easy way, or we can do it the hard way. The easy way: Get the FUCK out of my house and never come back. Or, if you'd rather do this the hard way-" She smirks- "You can get a few bullets in you."

The boys start laughing "Yeah of course." Light pushes Alouette aside and puts the shotgun underneath the shorter boy's jaw.

"Yes. Of course. Get the fuck out or get your brains splattered over the wall."

They quickly stop laughing. The taller boy glances towards the doorway, ready to run out. As the shorter starts nervously shaking. "Y-You wouldn't dare" he says.

She gives him a warning look, watching him start to press the trigger- she freezes for a moment- and bats the gun aside, pulling him away by his collar.

He pulls the trigger in the split second that she pulls him away. The pellets hit the ceiling instead. He looks at Alouette angrily. "What did you do that for?"

"I'm sorry, I can't let you do that." She grits her teeth, staving off a bout of anger-fueled tears. "I just can't."

He looks at her. "Alouette. They harmed you. They're invading your hou-"

The sound of a door closing comes from the hall as an obese man walks into the living room. The man advances towards Light and grabs him by his neck tightly. Raising him up. "Well hello there..." he says.

She freezes. "Ohhh no."

He struggles to breathe as the man slowly starts choking him. The shotgun falls to the floor as Light looks at Alouette. His eyes wide as his face turns pale

"Let him GO!" She barely has to move before she's leaning against Light, scratching and prying at the man's hands.

The man kicks her back as the two boys grab her by the arm and pin her against the wall "Don't worry about him. Such a beautiful girl deserves better than that guy." the taller boy says, putting his hand under her chin.

Wincing at the pressure on her wings, she glares hard at him. "Like you're any better!" With the last word, she brings her knee up between his legs, balling her now-free hand into a fist and punching the shorter in the jaw. "Now you-" Finger by finger, she pries the large hands from around the boy's throat- "Can take your friends and leave."

The obese man quickly moves Light out of the way so she can't reach him. Seconds later Light falls to the floor...

She glares at him, kneeling and snatching the gun from the floor so none of them can get it. "If he's been hurt worse..."

The boys quickly grab her by the neck, making sure the shotgun is pointed down at the floor they pin her to the wall once again. "Now stop struggling" one of then says.

Then suddenly a white flash of light fills the room. Moments later the supposedly dead boy punches the guys pinning Alouette to the wall in the jaw.

She blinks at the sudden light, her vision dark but slowly returning. "What was that?!"

He quickly pulls the shotgun out of Alouette's hand, pumps ot the last shell. Points it at the smaller boy's face and-

"What are you-!"

Moments later a colorful pattern of flesh and bone marrow is sprayed over the wall with a loud bang

The taller boy gasps before running quickly to the door. He runs out without thinking and then disappears below at alarming speeds.

The obese man quickly runs towards the door and takes a hold of the ladder they used to get here. Nervously he vanishes out of sight.

She screams, a shrill, horrified sound. "Oh- what is- why-" Before she knows it, the tears are coming, and suddenly she's crouched on the
floor, her hands covering her ears and her eyes squeezed shut. "Why- whywhywhy-"

He looks before him. The headless body slumped against the wall. As the last few streams of blood flow down. He doesn't say anything. He just stares in front of him...

Her chest heaves with each shallow breath, though she tries to breathe normally. "Why... Did this..." The smell of iron is overpowering, and she gags, choking on nothing. Almost unconsciously, her wings curve around her, a familiar feeling, if not quite comforting.

He drops the shotgun to the floor and turns around to Alouette. He sees her on the floor and looks at her, not quite sure of what to do.

She flinches at the sound, trembling with fear and horror, too scared to look up. "Why..." Her lips move, but no sound comes out, nothing more than a shaky breath.

"They tried to harm you..." he says, his voice emotionless as he looks forward into empty space.

She hears him speak, but it's muffled, far away. 'How could this have happened...?'

He kneels down before her and wipes a few tears away. "Alouette. Are you okay?"

She freezes at the feel of his fingers, but then cold fear settles in her stomach and she scrambles back. "Don't touch me!" Her eyes wide and scared, she looks around the room, finding a way to escape.

He flinches back at her sudden outburst. "Alouette.
Please!" he says, looking at her. "I was trying to protect you!"

"Y-you didn't need to-to do it like that...!" Without a second thought, she stumbles to her feet, running past him and back into her room. Hands shaking, she somehow manages to get the door locked, and slumps down on her bed. "Why..." Why so many things. Why was she there when he was attacked... Why did she have to save him... Why did he live until they got here... Why didn't she give him up right at that moment when they burst into her house.

He sighs and sits down on the couch. Thinking... "Why didn't I just die... We'd all be happy that way..." several disturbing thoughts flood into his mind: "Why doesn't she just die...?" he pulls his pocket knife out of his pocket. He advances down the hall and stops in front of the bedroom door. He glances at his knife before he knocks...

She freezes, hearing a knock at the door. Taking a deep, shuddering breath, she decides not to respond.

He knocks again. "Alouette? Alouette! I got something to tell you..." he says.

Drawing her feet up off the floor, a sudden chill overtakes her, and she rubs her arms, trying to warm up.

He knocks again. "Alouette? Can you hear me?" he asks again.

She ignores him again, though the way he says her name gives her chills. 'Just go away, please...' she thinks, not even daring to breathe.

He knocks harder. "Alouette! I know you're in there!"

She looks over at the window, not wanting to move. 'Can I get out that way...?'

"Alouette..." he says as he slumps against the door.

Hearing the thud, she freezes up again, unwilling to give any sign that she's in there.

He starts sobbing, "Alouette... Please..."

It tears at her heart to hear him cry, but she can't face him- not now, not ever. As quietly as she can, she slips out the window, and, spreading her wings to catch the wind, flies away.

After knocking multiple times he slumps back to the living room. He walks to the kitchen and grabs a towel. Cleans the mess on the wall and throws the body out of the door. He lies on the couch. Thinking... And then drifts to sleep

It's dark when she finally turns back, though she knows the way so well she doesn't have to think. She knows that she's a mess, and she looks like a mess, but right know she can't bring herself to care. Afraid of what she'll see, she goes back in through her bedroom window, and cautiously unlocks the door.

Softly, she steps out of her room and walks down the hall. The boy's still there, sleeping on the couch, though the room looks like nothing had ever happened. The blood splattered down her side shows the contrary, however; no matter how much she wants to, she can't erase what's happened. Shaking her head, she backs out of the room and makes her way into the bathroom. "Gotta get clean..."

The boy rolls around and falls on the floor with a loud thud. He awakes with a shock and looks around.

She flinches at the sudden noise, banging her elbow on the door. "Oooow..."

He looks up towards the sound "Alouette?" he says as he stands up.

Quickly, she shuts and locks the door behind her, and shoves the cabinet in front of it.

He walks to the bathroom door "Alouette! Can you hear me?"

"Go away!" Her voice cracks, slipping up an octave, and she winces.

He flinches "A-Alouette..." he says. Losing hope.

Finally she answers, unable to deal with it anymore. "What?"

"Why... Why?" he asks, half-sobbing now.

"Why what?" She leans against the wall, uneasily waiting for his response.

"Why do you hate me now?" he asks.

"I don't hate you..." She says, thinking, 'I may fear you... But I don't hate you.'

"Then why are you avoiding me like this?" he asks. Sobbing.

"Because I'm scared," her voice comes out as a whisper.

He barely hears what she's saying. "Scared...? Why are you scared?"

"Because of you..." She sinks down to the ground, wrapping her arms around her knees.

He leans against the door and sinks down in a similiar manner "Why are you scared of me?"

"It's real now... Before, I couldn't believe it, that you supposedly killed all those girls... But now..." She chokes up, resting her forehead on her knees. "Now I can..."

He sighs and looks in front of him. "...I can't..."

"Can't what...?"

"...I can't kill you..." he says as his tears dry up.

"All the others, though... What did they do to deserve it...?" She asks, though she's sure there's no real answer.

He looks in front of him. "Bad luck..."

"What do you mean, bad luck?!" Her voice rises, hysterical. "There's no way that you can accidentally kill so many...!"

"It wasn't on accident..." he says. His voice flat and emotionless.

"Then what was it?!" She nearly shrieks, almost ready to break down again.

"... It felt good killing them..." he says.

A low whine sounds in her throat, and she pulls her legs closer. 'Trapped in a bathroom with a serial killer on the other side of the door... What am I supposed to do?'

He looks in front of him again "As I said... I can't kill you..."

"But you still..." She falls silent. There's no way out.

"Still... What?"

"Even if you can't kill me... You still killed them."

He stares in front of himself. "Then why did you save me?"

"I couldn't believe it then..." Her voice softens, her fingers searching for something to cling to. "I couldn't believe that someone that looked so sweet could kill someone... Much less in cold blood..."

He closes his eyes "'Sweet'?" he asks her, confused.

"You don't look like a murderer." She says flatly, thinking of how they first met. "You looked harmless, helpless, and I couldn't leave you."

Tears start to well up in the corners of his eyes "I-I" he grabs his pocket knife and looks at it.

"I should've left you." She says softly, wiping at her eyes. "If I hadn't taken interest... None of this would've happened."

'...All because of me...' "Fuck this." he says. He rolls up his sleeve and positions the knife above his arm...

"FUCK THIS!" he yells in anger as the knife digs into his arm multiple times.

"What?!" She startles, hearing him shout. "Are you..." Quickly, she pulls the cabinet back, fumbling with the doorknob.

He stabs his arm multiple more times before letting the knife rest. Crying as his vision starts getting blurry.

"S-stop that..!" She bursts into tears, seeing the blood rushing from his arm, already coating the knife in his hand. "Why..!"

"I'm only causing trouble to you..." he pants as his head starts spinning.

"Th-that doesn't mean you have to die..!" She presses her hands to his arm, trying futilely to stop the bleeding. "You're an idiot..."

He pants heavily, "Why not? I only cause you trouble and harm." he says.

"No... Y-you never hurt me... Not really..." She bows her head, trying to calm herself. "You're just..."

"Just what?" he barks at her as his vision becomes blurry.

"Just an idiot..." She says miserably, resting her cheek on top of his head, tears soaking his hair.

His hand is already on the knife. 'Why don't you just stab her? Now's the chance' he grabs the knife. Raises it. Ready to stab and then-

The knife is flung through the hallway, hits the wall and falls to the floor.

"Be careful with that..." She scolds him halfheartedly, voice muffled. "Don't you die on me..."

A faint smile appears on his face. "Y-You're strange, you know that?"

"You heard me." She mumbles, trying hard not to start crying again.

He puts his hand over hers which is still covering his wounds "Thanks." he whispers.

She flinches at the touch, but quickly relaxes and whispers back, "You're welcome..."

After a few moments he stands up, his legs shaking "It's probably best to take care of these wounds first..." he says.

She tries to smile. "Of course..."

His legs shake, barely supporting his weight. Moments later he falls down and passes out as a small puddle of blood forms around his arm.

She gasps sharply as he falls, blood puddling around his arm. Picking him up gently, she carries him back to the couch and runs to get bandages. Coming back, he still hasn't woken up, so she sits down beside him and lets his arm rest in her lap as she winds bandages around it.

His arm twitches as she touches it.

Gently, she brushes the back of her hand over his forehead, hoping that he'll stay calm when he wakes up.

A faint smile forms on his face when she touches his forehead.

Tying off the end off the bandages, she looks at his face and sees that he's smiling. "Glad you're okay..." she mumbles, shifting a little closer to him. 'What is it about you..? You're a troublemaker, a murderer... But I only want to take care of you...' she thinks, and shakes her head.

But then she realizes, 'He is like me, he was the one that caused that light...' She smiles ruefully. 'Another Guardian... It's weird that I didn't recognize him from the Beginning.' Sighing, she rests her cheek on his head. 'But that was a long time ago. I shouldn't be surprised.'

As she rests her cheek on his head he slowly regains consciousness. He opens his eyes and looks around to see Alouette is right next to him. "..."

She hums quietly, barely registering that he's woken up.

As he hears her humming his muscles relax.

Feeling him move the slightest bit, she lifts her head and looks at him. "You're awake?"

He opens his eyes and looks up at her. "Yeah..." he looks down at his arm. "You bandaged it... Why?"

"Because I know now... You're like me." She looks back at him, her gaze steady for once. "If you died, then... What would happen to all of the light in the world?"

His face cramps together for a second before he asks, "What are you talking about?"

"You made the light earlier... Aren't you a Guardian?" She sounds calm, but really, she's confused. 'Why doesn't he know...'

"Light? What light?" he asks as his arm starts shaking nervously.

"It blinded everyone but you. Right before..." She trails off. 'Is he trying to hide it...?'

He nervously looks the other way. "No idea what you're talking about"

Putting a hand on the side of his head, she forces him to face her. "I'm sure you do. Why are you trying to hide it?"

He grunts as one of the wounds in his arm reopens. "I-I... I swore to hide it..." he says. Still looking at Alouette.

"It's not an issue, though... I know what you're hiding." She goes silent, moving a hand to his back. It seems to grow warm. "What I don't
understand is why."

"..." he sighs. "It's the cause of all this..."

"...What do you mean?" Slowly, she nudges him to his feet. 'Don't tell me he overused it...' She shakes off the thought. "Jump."

He lifts one foot and feels it float a bit "What the-" he feels his other foot lift off as well. As he's floating he holds Alouette's arm.
"W-What the heck?"

She giggles at his reaction. "See? You can tell me."

"P-put me down first!" He says, clinging to Alouette's arm. Frantically scrambling around his legs trying to get back on the ground.

"You'll be fine." She laughs, pulling him back to the couch.

He sits down. Still holding Alouette's arm. "I-I'll tell you everything."

"Alright." She nods, waiting for him to continue.

"Yes... I'm a Guardian. Yes, I can control light... But I swore to not use it..." he sighs and looks down.

"Why? You're one of the most powerful..." She trails off.

"...A few years ago I went a bit overboard with my powers..." he closes his eyes. "I somehow remember something called a 'Magic taint'... If a guardian uses too much of it's power they.... Corrupt..."

"I know..." She says softly, "I remember someone told us,
when we first arrived."

"Using so much power made me go... Insane..." his voice
starts cracking. "Whenever I use my powers I get the urge to kill someone..."

"Is that what happened... To them?" She asks, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. "Were you trying to protect them...?"

"No... I just... Used to much power once and... It's now like, 'hardwired' into my mind. When I use my powers the feeling just gets stronger..."

"Oh..." She slowly shakes her head. "You shouldn't have to deal with that... No one should..."

"..." A tear wells up in his eye. "Thank you..." he says.

"It's true..." She whispers, "You control the element of light, you're supposed to be the counter to the creepy-crawlies in the dark, and this just goes against it... If we could heal it, though..."

"I don't think we could heal it..." he holds her hand. "Well. I guess you being here helps..."

Hesitantly, she kisses his forehead. "There's a way to, though... I'm sure of it."

He blushes a bit and looks at the ground. "Thank you..."

She smiles slightly. "It's no problem, really."

"What do you mean 'no problem'... I appeared in your life out of nowhere. Had multiple mobs of people come to your house to harm you and am using up your space, bandages and brother's coffee and still... You care for me..."

"There's something about you... Kind of like a candle flame in a dark room, I guess." She admits, looking away for a moment. "I want to help you stay strong."

"Then... Why am I that candle?" he asks hesitantly.

"I guess... because your element is light?" It's not quite a question or a statement, but somewhere in between.

He chuckles. "Sure." He looks at Alouette again

"It makes sense." She smiles ruefully.

"What does?" he asks her.

She laughs silently. "You being a candle."

"I think you're the candle here... You're the only good thing in my life so far..." he says, blushing slightly.

"You think so?" She asks, looking away.

He moves her head so she faces him again. "Yeah... I've been ignored, attacked, cursed at by everyone my entire life... But you..."

"Not your whole life... The taint didn't happen until later, I'm sure." She reminds him quietly, "And... That's just who I am."

"... Even before the taint..." he says letting go of her head.

"But why before...? You're light..."

"I guess the world just needs something to shit on..."

"The world is just wrong sometimes." She whispers, leaning against him.

"I don't care..." he says as he puts his arms over her
shoulder and looks at her. "As long as you're here..."

"If you say so..." There's still something telling her that this is a terrible idea, but she ignores it. 'It's not his fault... It's never been his fault.'

He looks back again to the door opening. "We um... Should get that door fixed..."

((TIME FOR ME TO START CONVERSAATIONN))
Zwn watched in silence as the two newcomers conversed with her two companions. And questions begun to spin in her mind. She looked at Ross in astonishment. "How could you defeat him with fire.. You're the water guardian.." She began, and paled, "He died, didn't he? A-and you got his powers b-because you're his opposite aspect?" She continued, wondering where this knowledge came from. A soft wind blew her brown hair into her face as she stood weakly and staggered towards Takot, looking at him closely with a gentle frown on her face. "A-and you, you were the other one who died, weren't you?" She muttered and then blushed in embarrassment and scrambled backwards on legs that trembled from the effort. "Sorry.. it's just.. you look like you haven't been spirit for a while.."

Skri'ik nodded at Liro's correction and took in all this information. Hmm... all this information was useful. Ross now wielded the dual elements of Water and Fire? Likely a result of circumstance, ones he was curious to find out. Just as he was thinking about this, Zwn answered his question before he could even ask it. So another guardian had died. Unfortunate, but this opened up potential for a powerful ally.
"Hmm... darkness is dangerous, especially when preying on those alone. It's good that you managed to defeat it for now. Well, what should we do now? We have strength in numbers. Our enemies are all injured, but so are some of us. Do we take this opportunity to pursue them, or do we lick our own wounds?"
