Quick blurb. I've recently had a big argument and am organizing my two main thoughts.

The Spread And Glorification of Spreading Information and Knowledge

I honestly feel bad for anyone in highschool around the 1990s that liked to learn and constantly seek knowledge. The portrayal of "nerds" around this time period by pop culture wasn't the kindest nor thought provoking. Yet to a hopeful day of now your legitimate ability to learn and using the internet to learn is awesome. Google itself was literally created so someone could find the most recent information of present time of anything. Hotdogs is our subject. How would someone be able at complete ease bee able to find out a generalized information of hotdogs that is to date in the 1990s?

A World Without Quick Search Engines: Why is my pee green? Oh well, I guess That 70s Show might have a segment on it.

It is why so many people are able to spit out class assignments without investigating on their subject weeks in advance. It's why over 900,000 people now know how to make sugar glass. It's how I wrote this quick article.

A Raceless/Faceless Outlet to Communicate and Express

Personal one here. As a dysfunctional Vietnamese male who is average in height and is constantly battling baby face fat, I get put into roles people assume I'll fit. Like a web designer apparently or something probably intelligent, high standard, but not leadership in any form. Rare moments have I ever been given full control of a situation or the allowance of my opinion being considered basically because of the way I look. It'll happen to you, it sort of does to everyone. Whether better or worse sometimes I relish in the days that I surprise people because I don't fit their standardized role and other days it's honestly a problem that I feel like will never end and I'll never break out of.

Which is why I have my internet surrogate family to thank. My anonymity has allowed me to speak to many different communities on the same level as they are. The only judgement a person can receive on the internet ((generally)) is based on the content they have to offer and their personality. Extremely large relationships have been formed through the world wide web and radical movements have been pushed for awareness and an attempt for people to reach out and find people with the same interests.

Final thing is how has the internet benefited you? What's your reasons? This is an open thread for anyone who's looking to defend their alternate life ((internet life)) to a broad spectrum. Whether it be family, friends, anyone you have the ability and means to advocate, display an amazing avenue that many, many people use and is "normal" to them.

Dam u str8 babygurl. It's about time I posted a feel good thread.

Escapism.
Which, I'm sure, is something many on the internet can relate to.

After a long day at work, taking classes or simply wanting to wind down, the web is a wonderful tool. It allows us to relax and explore a near endless realm of entertainment and information (so long as you're not looking at Youtube comments).
Personally, I'm very unwell and am unable to do much at the moment. The internet keeps me up to date with the world as well as providing me with day to day distractions. It has lead me to finding music genres I never knew existed, watching shows and cartoons I would have never so much as glanced at without, as well as communities and people that share those very same passions.

Just always remember the golden rule of not taking anything on the internet too seriously. It is inhabited by people that want to make your day worse if you're willing to fall victim to their traps. All you need to do is keep calm, post a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and carry on.

I have quite benefited from the Internet.

Entertainment
Sometimes, I have no idea what else to do, so I just join the Internet and voila! My boredom is cured.

Homework
The Internet really, really helps me with my homework when I need it. For example, I needed to look up on kata seerti, so I looked it up over the internet. That really helped me with my Malay homework.

Communication
Sometimes, I want to talk with someone from far away, so I simply send an email to my grandfather. Yes, it's really heartwarming to read his emails.

Loneliness
When I get really lonely, all I have to do is log on! And presto, all of you make me happy =) I barely have any friends, and they communicate with others more...

And last, but certainly not least...

In fact, it's the main reason.

Escapism
Escape from the real world. When I go over the Internet, I can forget about all my problems, even if it's temporary. No one's calling me bad names, no one's kicking my chair, no one's throwing rocks at me and don't care if it hits me in the eye. My... My real life sucks, you know? So what if I'm a little different than them; so what if I'm not as good at the language they're speaking? I know that some of you are here for the same reason; to put on your headphones, turn the music up at full volume and drown out everything that ever hurt you, be it emotionally or physically. I'm usually just silent at school; people barely listen to me there anyway. This was a surprise to my family members when the teacher told me I wasn't as loud as my classmates in school, since I'm usually such a loudmouth at home. But they listen. They listen to what I say, unlike them. When I raise my hand to ask a question, people just laugh at me. But hey! I opened my mouth to ask a question because I didn't understand it, not just chatting about random people and spreading false rumours about other people like they do. You listen too. You guys listen to me unlike them as well, even though you don't hear my voice. You don't hear my voice, but you hear me, listen to what I have to say. Reading fanfiction allows me to read about happy endings that don't reach me, that may never will, and just being here makes me feel less lonely, less unheard.

... Thank you.

Just for hearing me. For listening to what I have to say.

... Thank you all.

Like Shark said, languages. My Spanish and Interlinguan have significantly improved due to online immersion in that language. Even though it's more difficult than someone trying to learn English, because naturally there'd be more English on the internet than other languages, I'd still be a near lost cause without it.

I have learn alot of English on the internet, especially much in blocktopia. I highly doubt that my english would be any where near where it is now if I had just learnt it at school. I have also used internet as entertainment, as long as I remmeber, I have played verious flash games, and other "proper" games.

Escapism - Get away from it all
The obvious reason people would use. I've always used the internet to escape from life, enjoy the little things.

Entertainment - Video Games
Video games and all that. Goes hand in hand with escapism.

Answers - Search Engines
The ability to look up the answer to that one question etching you at the back of your mind, without the need to ask people directly. I wish people would look things up more often.

Communication - Social Networking
Everyone needs some time with others, even if they prefer to be alone. With the internet, you can go to social networking sites for interaction, such as the forums, Facebook, or simply e-mails. It's one way to not go crazy.

Schooling - Dropbox
Recently, Google has given teachers the option to bring school to home, better than our typical homework. Now, we can see documents that our teachers want us to see without the need of passing out papers, by putting it up on a school dropbox via Google Drive. We can even drop our homework in the dropbox, if we so wish to.

Schooling - Learning new things
With the internet, we can now learn things that people would have to learn through paid schooling. We can learn new languages, how to do random specific things, and things I can't even think of right now. You could say this is a mix of school and search engines, but it deserves its own subtitle.

Honestly, not having the internet for over a month, and not having internet while school is going on, you notice the necessities of the internet.

I really hope I get my box reinstalled this weekend, especially considering I need to do some work for school on my computer, and putting the word document in the dropbox would be the easiest way of turning it in. It was supposed to be turned in today, but since I didn't have a USB to bring the word document home, I had to postpone turning it in to my teacher. He gave me leeway to turn it in on Tuesday, but the internet would still be helpful.
