So the last one was a bit of a flop, given that we didn't really consult people properly and were pretty lazy with the design process, so i thought we might make this thread and see if theres any neat ideas flying about for a new lobby.

Obviously its a bit of a balance, so feel free to suggest any ideas you have for a new lobby, just keep these in mind

  • Has to be 'aesthetically' pleasing, we want people to walk into this lobby and like the look of it.
  • Has to be easy to navigate, that is no corridors/etc.
  • You have to be able to immediately see where the servers are and, preferably, know which server is which, without having to go and read as ign.
Feel free to be creative!

Why can't we keep the one we have now and adjust it to the upcoming Solitude?

Could we have the reasons we need a new, new lobby? Because I think this one's fine.
The issue with the current lobby is navigation for new players. Players who logs on face the signs when they sign in, not the instant teleporation signs behind them. I am aware players have Speed V, but it'd be even more convenient if we had a more spacious thing (not the quickly-reverted lobby spacious)...

In the meantime, I'm having difficulties coming up with any lobby ideas. The last one obviously didn't make the cut (besides, it had too much emptiness).

Hm... how about floating semi-spheres, with bridges obviously. Remove the building that surrounds spawn... yeah, I might make an example.

I'm going to start to say I'm glad the core of this prolem is to focus on new players. Potentials. But to the sign issue: Wouldn't a more sufficient solution be that the lobby spawn be turned around so players are facing the the teleportation signs with an automatic message that states something along the lines of, "Please press a sign to go to that server! C:"?

Plus the sign that the players log in to are directional arrows that point to the portals for the servers.
Arrows mean jack shit obviously.

What's also wrong with that contention is that you've literally stated what could be an opinion. It literally would baffle me if someone had any problem with finding the server they desire to go to because there are signs everywhere and signs at the gateways of the portals. Not to be disheartening, but if a potential player can't use signs for navigate the current lobby why would we want them as a player? Inability to read and understand signs would be the inability to understand whatever server's rules they go on.

Next, more space. More space would be needed if Blocktopia was receiving ten servers, not just one. There is plenty space for the upcoming Solitude server, and wouldn't more space make it a larger issue for the sign inadequate players to understand?

The current lobby is just fine. What it needs is a small adjustment for Solitude coming in. And seriously turn lobby spawnpoint around.

I think that the current lobby is okay.
What might be better is if it's a bit more open, none of these big halls and rooms. (*room)
A similar design to the current lobby, but with a new layout, and each server easily visible, with the portal appropriately decorated, and maybe a small info sign, so new players can look about for a bit and choose something to try first

Edit: So Bram's ninja'd space station idea could work

I think the new lobby fails to advertise our servers in any useful way to people logging on, the server portals are neither clear nor are they immediately visible from spawn. You can argue that "people can just follow the signs ~ but most new people have no clue what the signs are (new players have no clue what AoD, Jte, Rof, etc. is) , they're forced to typically rely on what the server portal looks like or the name of the server itself. Since you'd have to run around the entirety of spawn once to see every server portal, and even then its not 100% on what some of the servers are, it just feels inconvenient.

I am not to in-favor of the first one, but nor am I just seeking to have only the current lobby be our server. What I was thinking was we could have a sort of a circle with extensions on it. So something sorta like this

ignore the totally professional art
Where each prong could be a different server with the hall and room designated to that server. For ease of moving around there could be a buffer of about speed 3? Not to sure on that though. Anyway, For the main spawn area (the big circle) It could be something that represents blocktopia as a whole. Whether it is our timeline built into a wall (sorta like a mosaic) or a random key part of blocktopia. Just my ideas on this.

Here is my idea:

Lowest blue circle would be spawn point, where you instantly see portals (red circles).
Black dots are signs on single blocks, that allows to go instantly to desired servers.
Gray rectangle is pathway, that leads into main hub, it may be fairly short.
Second blue circle connects spawn with server portals for those, who wants to explore.
Black lines are pathways connecting server portals with main hub.

There could be timeline of Blocktopia in blue circles.
My designs allows to see all portals without need of turning around ;)

Playing around with a similair idea to Dessern, tho i had the thought of having a small city floating on a water circle with roads leading to the different portal areas, but the city itself could of coruse be changed to whatever might fit better, fancy visual representation here:
you win, everyone can go home now
[dessern too tho]

I think a great idea would be to have a main floating island and then small bridges leading to other floating islands which would be the 5 servers, the portals would be decorated around with the servers theme.

What I think would be great is a floating circular area with all the portals clearly labeled and decorated around it, so players have a relativity small area to find the servers. Outside of the circle we can have some fanciness.

This is my idea, although my plot is too small to do the landscape I want; http://i.imgur.com/RF4jBbV.png
players would spawn on top and could explore around if they wanted. I'll do more if I can finish building my computer :I

Possibly, the buildings inside the city could contain information about Blocktopia and the history of Blocktopia. The roads leading to each portal can have signs telling about the server along the sides of it.

Instead of signs we could always have the walking instructions thing that is on RoF and TnT (?), It would give a bit of information about the server so that beginners are not lost.

Yes TNT has them, for the tutorial and for the store.
