I hope the admins don't flog me for making this thread. To get straight to the point, I've been very curious about how A modded minecraft server would do amongst the community, or if it would even be popular. To anyone even remotely interested in modded minecraft who hasn't seen this should check this out.

It's basically a large collection of modpacks with an amazingly simple to use launcher that in my opinion could very well make a permanent modded server for blocktopia viable. I know a modded server has been tried before and ultimately failed, but I think the possibilities are to great to not give this another attempt.
The biggest, and obvious reason to attempt such is the possibility for a staggering amount of new content. The only limitations are what the modding community turns out, and what we ultimately decide to use which brings me to another point, community input. If the logistics are possible, A community assembled modpack decided by votes could go over quite well. Finally, while the following is an abstract concept, I do believe this to be valid. A heavily modded copy of minecraft creates a very refreshing experience not unlike playing an entirely new game.
Before you decide to discard this idea entirely, I only ask you to maybe download and try a modpack on an ssp world, or do some more research on any of the mods. Perhaps this could be done as an event server again to see how well it goes over at least. If you do have any criticisms, please do say them in the comments, I've got a few ideas about how to overcome some possible obstacles.

Ah, I played some modded minecraft some time ago, I had really fin, except that the one server I played at, the staff were dicks, and on the other there wasnt staff at all. I would love to see a FTB mindcrack/ultimate server, but I got a few worries.

  • Are we enough players in blocktopia?

  • Will the server be able to stay healthy? As far as I know, and what I saw on the servers, FTB servers needs a lot of maintance, and some one who knows the mods well.

  • Do we have enough RAM, or basicly computer power, to run this? The ones I was on sometimes lagged, and at one of them it was usualy 10 to 3 tps.
If theese worries I got isnt that big of a problem, I would love to see it in blocktopia.

Modded servers are the future of Minecraft. RoF and AoD are modded servers, and they're good. JtE is not modded, it has plug-ins but is just a normal server with a special map.

RoF is a gamemode with a system, it's not the same as playing singleplayer with some plug-ins. The same goes for AoD, you can't play AoD on your singleplayer because it's a specially coded gamemode. I personally think Blocktopia should stop making new SMPs and focus more on getting a unique idea for a gamemode and getting one of their current coders to code it. Alternatively, they could hire a coder to make a gamemode. (Yes, it's expensive. It can cost around $100 or $200 to make a unique and functioning gamemode)

But, asides from the cost, how could would it be to have a unique server? People will come to your community for that server because only you hold the right to host the gamemode as long as you do not release it to the public.
