well the past 2 smps that we had were almost full pvp and that didn't seem to work out as much as jte, which was mostly pve and partly pvp. I'd really like to see another smp like jte and I'm pretty sure a lot of people do too. an smp where you must apply to be an official town, an smp where emeralds are actually worth something and could be used to trade in useful stuff, an island that is only accessible during the weekend that has amazing trades that change weekly.

im sure others would prefer this rather than a pvp filled smp. plus there aren't even that many pvpers anymore so might as well make it peaceful...

I think the idea of Town Applications is good. Maybe something along the lines of
Town name:
Mayor's name:
Mayor's ontime (At least 6 hours):
Who would join your town? (At least 5):
(Of course there wouldn't be a need for many questions)
I actually think the rest of the idea is good too (Just took Math test, can't practically write rn). I think PvP should really be an AoD thing, and SMPs should be PvE or possibly even peaceful (I think that with the right idea peaceful *might* work, but mostly PvE)

on jte the town applications were mainly to have a good theme to follow (blocks used), everyone needing a certain rank of ontime (to prevent the town from being dead), and having active members

There shouldn't be a premade faction system and PvP should be optional.
I like the town application idea and then with towns that can dis- or enable PvP. Towns would only be able to fight with other towns that have PvP enabled. Players that want to PvP can join a town more about fighting/raiding while players that don't like PvPing are protected and can join a town that is more about building. Non-PvP can make the game too boring while open-PvP can be too frustrating for players.

To be honest I think the community will not benefit from a SMP server right now at all as the other MC servers are still too often pretty empty.

The question at this point isn't what the next SMP should be, it's whether or not there should even be a next SMP in the foreseeable future at all. Right now, as Vatumok already pointed out, I believe that we should focus on the already existing servers and then move on from there, if the need/desire for a new SMP is large enough.

Not really sure if I need to say anything here, but another SMP won't help much, especially if its based off of a previous server.

If people really have a dying need for SMP then set up a temp server for awhile, BUT instead of doing vanilla go find a nice modpack which supports multiplayer and set that up. I remember the Yogscast Packs on the A&T launcher being great fun and also supported multiplayer servers.

Downside is with modpacks you can't really control griefers as well as you can in vanilla and pvp is often outright unbalanced, but hey if you don't like that just become a wizard with thaumcraft and completely prevent people from entering your turf because your magic runes teleported them into a pool of lava. Thats fun.. right?

(I'm not going to quote because it's a pain in my ass on this computer.)

I don't think we should discredit the fact that a new SMP could jumpstart RoF. Nobody could've predicted that Kami's would've killed RoF. I remember when AoD closed I was talking with some people in RoF, we all agreed that RoF would probably keep at least some playerbase for a while.
It's been 8 months since then, and it's impressive to see more than two people on RoF. Maybe a new SMP would help, but we shouldn't count on it.
What RoF needs is something unique to reignite what made it bold in the first place. Unfortunately, I don't have any ideas for RoF, and this thread isn't about RoF

Adding a new server can definitely collapse the playercount of another server. Create and AoD are mostly visited by a group of regulars and only every now and then someone new joins. If you make some of these players move to SMP in can make the other servers less fun (by having less players). For a new server to be added harmfully a flow of incoming new players is necessary or an abundance of players.
Not saying that this will happen, RoF was a different situation (worse/outdated server) and some people from the community may return to MC to play SMP. It's definitely something to keep in mind.
