A wild guess at this; the reason they don't want her to open the door, is it's probably broken, and what she'll see is the door falling onto her, once she pushes the door...

Or, if something bad where to happen to her, if she opened the basement, she'd see broken stairs? Because within darkness, you couldn't see broken stairs, meaning she could fall...

I do not see you ever saying kitchen. Also no, I did not search for the answer. Everyone else was assuming she was not in the basement so I presented an answer people hadn't thought of.

There are three guys that walk into a hotel. The guy at the desk says "The room costs $30.00." The guys pay, and go up to their room. The guy at the desk tells the bellhop that the room actually costs $25.00, so he gives the bellhop $5.00 to give back to the guys. The bellhop notices he can't distribute $5.00 into three people, so he pockets $2.00, giving the three guys $1.00 each.

So, technically, they paid $9.00 each.

9 x 3 people = 27 dollars

27 + 2 dollars that the bellhop pocketed = 29 dollars

What happened to the last dollar?

So this totally hurt my brain over but...
You used extra information that totally don't need!
So it's like... If they all paid $30 together... But the room only cost $25...
And the manager gave $5 to the bellhop to return to the 3 men...
And he pockets $2...

That equals $27 dollars total.

And when he returns the other $3 between the 3 men...
That should totally equal $30 exactly.

So there is no extra missing the dollar.
The missing dollar... Is actually being held onto by one of the 3 men it was distributed too!
