I'm not so sure about this, to be honest. In order for that to work, the arsonist would have to not douse anyone, which I doubt would help them, be them mafia, third party or what have you.
I've actually been pondering the idea of a third party arsonist, and I think it's actually quite possible. Obviously, an arsonist could easily (traditionally, but tradition means nothing in closed setup) just be aligned with the mafia, but where's the fun in that? I wouldn't put it past our hosts to turn a normally mafia role into a fancy serial killer-y role. Perhaps they could win by killing a certain number of people, kill someone from each faction, be the last on standing/douse everyone, ect.
Wait....why would their win condition even be relevant? x_x
This really rubs me the wrong way, and it might just be me mainly because I had read a different wiki to what I
believe Tim has, but even then I would find it suspect.
I don't know if its just me, but when Hype first talked about being "doused" and that it could well be in reference to an arsonist role, I first thought this would be, at least in a vanilla sense (as this is closed set-up and we don't know if roles are modified), that an "arsonist"-esq role would most likely be what you've been "pondering": a third-party or "neutral" role.
I mean really, giving any side, town or mafia, both of which that already has a large arsenal of powerful and potential assets in terms of theirs roles... a role like the Arsonist? To me, that seems highly unlikely unless there were at least some way to counteract it, or it is modified.
It appears
more like a different version of a Serial killer if you ask me then anything else.
I find it suspect that third-party arsonist would be something to ponder, since we have said earlier in the thread that the arsonist is traditionally a neutral role from other wikis.
In fact, that is exactly what shows up in the
first two links when "arsonist mafia" or
"mafia arsonist role" is searched in Google:
http://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=Arsonist http://wiki.sc2mafia.com/index.php/Arsonist
Both stating the arsonist is traditionally a "neutral" (aka. neither town nor mafia, so third-party)
with the chance of modification of alignment by the host.
Now I say this is probably just me who finds it suspect, because you, tim, probably is saying its "traditionally mafia" (at least, that is what I'm interpreting from those bracketed region) is probably from reading the EpicMafia wiki for, at least, a "general idea" of what the arsonist can do (since even in a closed set-up, a general idea is better than none):
I looked up Arsonist on the EM wiki, and got toally sidetracked \o/ and...wow that seems....very painful....Finding the arsonist should obviously . _. be our first priority!
But even though it seems reasonable, I find it strange.
I mean, although EM is normally the core for a lot of roles and their rules, EM's "arsonist" doesn't exactly show up right away. In fact, it doesn't even show up in the usual spot for roles, in the "characters" page:
http://wiki.epicmafia.com/index.php?title=Characters
Although the arsonist page on EM says its "mafia-aligned," it struck me as strange that arsonist didn't exactly have the same level of depth as all of EM other role pages; in fact its completely empty besides the little tab on the right (
probably due to it appearing, as someone who does not play EpicMafia, to be one of the "newer" roles; last updated roughly last week on the 30th of May, at least, when I used javascript:alert(document.lastModified) on the arsonist page's URL) side that gives a run-down of what that role does.
With how little information there was on it, I wouldn't really think it would be a good choice, especially with all the variants that randomly pop up in the learning section of EM, especially that one variant where it "burns down their house" which seems pretty popular but doesn't seem to really fit into the general mafia theme :/
https://epicmafia.com/role/6327 https://epicmafia.com/role/6327 etc... contrasting the wiki. It just seems strange to trust it and probably go to a different wiki for a better description to confirm what it is...
Ugh! I totally feel like I'm going overboard with this, and the more I write this the more I convince myself that its all so stupid but... I don't know, it just feels strange to me and It just makes me feel like you know more than you're letting on...
I don't know. :c
It's stupid, I don't even know why I'm deciding to go through and post this.
Even though I know it probably is just me overthinking it and going to the EM wiki says basically the same thing and... ugh, even knowing all that it still just...
feels strange.
You probably aren't even the arsonist... bleh, now I feel like I wasted an hour typing this up just to convince myself it was dumb.
Oh well, might as well post something since things seem to be coming to a standstill :/
Seriously guys, there's like, 17 of us, where did everyone go? :/
