Your first building

I've noticed that a lot of the first buildings people made/make are houses. You can do everything you want, a giant tree, a big machine, giant buildings, giant mountains and even presidential top hats. It's not the sims.

Houses are the easiest to build, and are for the most part key to Survival Minecraft. These being the first to be built on a CMP server seems quite obvious with that factor and the idea that there are a lot of reference images in comparison to other builds.
Nobody else seems to mind that houses are built, too.

I think my first building was a stone house I made when I first got minecraft. It had tons of glass windows and a room specifically to watch the sunrise/sunset with, and I was in the process of making an underwater tunnel out of glass.

My first house was back when I first started minecraft. I remember it because I made it out of TNT and tried blowing it up, not realising that I couldn't and ended up getting banned straight after for being an "idiot".

My first building was on a classic server, Liam1071's server, it ran Forge, it was creative, before the server went Premium I got C0-Owner. Anyway, my first build was indeed a house, but this house was made of only lava and water, checkered water and lava. 4 stories tall, 150 x 90 x 100.
