"U-um..." Putting my hand on Ross's shoulder and stepping forward a little, I speak up. What Cairne said reminded me of something. "About summoning humans... I think I may be able to."
"Wait....but aren't humans sort of animals? How would you be able to do it?"
Cairne turns around to face Ark. He appears surprised.
"What Cairne said reminded me of something I'm able to do, but I'm not sure if it works. It's... I'll show you."
"What."
I close my eyes and concentrate. I begin to feel heat from the large gold wristband on my right hand and the letters light up. I shake my head and keep focusing. Slowly, I build up a detailed picture of a human in my head. Feet... toenails... legs... leg hairs... I keep concentrating, trying to make no errors. Finally, I open my eyes and yell, "RISE."
When my vision focuses, however, my heart sinks. And then skips a beat. I begin running, but it already grabs my leg. A deteriorated corpse stares into my eyes and I feel it's cold breath on my face. I look into its eyes and see an endless, uninterrupted darkness. All I can do is squeak out "Help..."
Cairne facepalms. "Not this shit again."
Topaz glanced at the... thing... that the new comer she had yet to meet summoned. She took a step back, "The hell is that." she growled, glaring at the creature.
Cairne kicks the thing, and kicks it again, right in the head.
Ross gives up trying to associate with these people. Ark summoned a human...Well, he called it that anyway, and Cairne started kicking it. Ross just casually walks away.
Cairne charges in and bashes the zombie in the head with a powerful kick. The creature is sent flying off my body and I use this to my advantage, tucking my hands into my chest and rolling away. I get back up, covered in dirt. Fear gets the better of me and I begin to scream. "guys... WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO!?"
"YOU were the one who summoned it!! You tell us what to do!"
Topaz covered her ears, "First off you're not going to scream!" she growled.
Ross does his best to climb a nearby tree, and sits up in the canopy watching the group he just left from above. If he was needed, he'd react, if not, he would wait for them to leave, and then relax.
Sweat beads down my face. The thing starts to get up again. I need to think of something fast.
I scour my memories for something I can use - a weapon.
The zombie is up. We start to back off slowly but I trip over and fall on my back.
It starts limping towards me. Then it breaks into a sprint, blood trailing from its head.
It opens its mouth and releases a bloodcurdling scream. Its deformed hand reaches for my body...
"STOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!!!!!" The next series of events feels like it's happening in slow motion. I feel a strong desire to live, and a golden staff appears in front of me.
I grab the staff and spin it around once, slamming the hideous creature in the hip.
Before it can recover, I am up and charging again. "STOP!" I yell again, sending the staff straight through its body.
With a final killing blow, I kick it into a tree and swing the staff at its head and feel the skull crumple beneath it.
"What's that?" Alouette hears a series of screams, and turns towards the newly-made jungle. "Guys, come on! Something's wrong!"
Zwn frowns, nodding at Alouette, and turning to follow her.
Tora watches as Ark slams the 'human' into a tree, "Holy shit.. What was that."
Topaz glances at the creature, "...Should we bury it...?" she questions, then looks at the newcomer she had yet to meet, "So... are you alright or...?"
She runs for them, hoping she's going in the right direction, and stops just in time to see a... Creature crumple to the ground. "What happened?"
It is at that moment that I snap. My rage overflows inside of me and fills my ears and mouth and eyes.
Cairne has no idea what's going on, but it seems to have ended. He watches the "battle."
"STOP! STOP! STOP!" I continuously send the staff into the creature's head... body... arms... legs.
"Um, Ark?.. Are you ok? It's dead.."
"STOP!" I keep yelling, tears streaming from my face.
Zwn follows, stopping and watching as Ark plunges his staff into the dead creature over and over, "Ark! Are you okay?"
Topaz watched the male continuously stab the creature, "Calm the hell down! It's dead!" she yelled.
Again and again, the staff is plunged into the creature.
Cairne slaps Ark. "Calm-" he slaps again- "down." He grabs Ark's wrist. "Dude, your cape is loosening."
"What's wrong?!" She half-screams, and darts over to them. "Ark, calm down!"
"Wha - " I turn around and look at Cairne, my face contorted in rage.
Cairne wonders whether that got his attention, then lets go of his wrist and backs away.
She stumbles back, noting the color of his eyes. "What's wrong?!"
As my eyes take in his familiar face, the expression on my face loosens.
Cairne steps back slowly.
Tora walks over to him and puts her hand on his shoulder, "Calm down! It's de-" When he turns she sees that his eyes are red, "Um Ark?" She takes a step back.
The girl steps towards Ark, unlike everyone else, and lifts are hand, "Ark calm down.."
I look around at all my friends... The people I thought were my friends. Now they look at me with animosity.
Cairne wonders where the fuck Zwn came from. How was she not noticed? "Oh hey Zwn didn't see you there, haha."
Zwn steps toward me. "Ark, calm down..."
"A-are you all right?" She doesn't move this time, looking up at him with concern.
I look down at Zwn for a long time. Slowly, my head turns around and looks back at the body... which has been mutilated beyond recognition. I whip my head back around and look in everyone's eyes again. "Was that... me?"
Cairne accidentally brushes against Alouette's wings. He whispers, "Hey guys, this guy here...is he sane?"
Topaz gave the guardian a look, watching him. The group forming continued to question if the male was alright. "Yes, that was you."
She nods, lowering her hand and looking at Topaz as she answers the distraught guardian. She looks back with gentle eyes, "Was there something wrong, Ark?"
Topaz's sentence rips through me like a bullet. My knees collapse under me and I start to cry, putting my head in my hands.
"God damn it. He's emo."
I curl up into a ball, curling my arms around my skull as the tears continue to roll.
She flinches as someone brushes against her wings, and shoots a glare at Cairne. "Shut up! Can't you see there's something wrong!?"
Topaz was taken aback by the guardian's reaction. "U-uh... Calm down... It wasn't your fault... kind of..." she said, not the best with calming people.
"Actually, it was completely his fault-" Cairne is shut up by Alouette's glare.
Topaz shot Cairne a glare. "You're not helping." she growled.
Zwn falls softly to her knees and puts a hand on his back soothing, whispering "shoosh" in a soft voice. "Ark, it's okay Ark," she says gently, moving her hand in circles.
Alouette kneels in front of Ark, lightly touching his shoulder. "It's okay, I'm sure it wasn't your fault..."
Tora goes and sits down next to the group, looking at Zwn's face as she soothes the male, "It's gone now.."
Cautiously, I take my head out of my arms and look up at Zwn, tears and snot still smeared all over my face.
Cairne sighs and fumbles in his pockets. He brings out a box of tissues and tosses it at Ark. "You're welcome."
The girl continues to rub his back soothingly, smiling. "It's okay, it's not your fault," she whispers softly, shooting a pointed glare at Cairne briefly before looking back at the distraught boy.
I don't buy into their words. I'm still horrified at what I did. But the warmth I feel from everyone's comfort conjures up emotions in me that I can't hold back and I almost start crying again. "Th-ank you," I manage to choke out. "Thank you so much, everyone..."
She smiles, happy that he's feeling at least a little better.
Cairne raises his hand. "Hey kid," he reaches out to Ark and offers to help him up, but shoots a quick glare at Alouette where Ark can't notice.
A grin breaks out across my face. I take Cairne's hand and get back up on my feet. For some reason, I say jokingly, "I guess I won't be trying that again."
"Guess not."
Tora stand up and picks up Tadashi who was chewing on the mutilated 'human.' She walks over to Ark. "I think that would be best.."
She looks at Cairne in surprise, the small act seemingly out of place on the less compassionate guardian before looking back at Ark as he accepts the offer. She stands slowly, intertwining her hands in front of her as she watches.
She gets to her feet, a little astonished at the fact Cairne had been helpful for once.
"How'd you do that, anyway?" he asks, curious. He's also wondering about the staff.
I look at Cairne, confused, and then I remember. "Oh, that - that was summoning magic. It's an advanced form of magic but I need this wristband-" I point to the largest wristband on my right wrist, which has arrow-like inscriptions - "to help me do it."
"You have to have a clear picture of exactly what you need to summon, and it's a very risky magic."
"I don't know how I remember, but I think I was good at summoning small things before... uh, before I came here."
The brown haired girl raises an eyebrow, shifting her weight to the side as she listens to the boy's explanation of summoning magics. She lowers her eyes to the ground and furrows her brow, tapping on her chin, muttering to herself.
"That's certainly interesting." She says, referring to Ark's explanation about his magic. "You're all right now though, right?"
"Have you tried "summoning" a duplicate? Seems small enough it'd work."
"Yea, I'm alright. For what you said, Cairne, I'm not sure. I don't really remember..."
Although I'm saying the truth, I know it's hard for them to believe me. Even I can see that the moments where my memories are hazy are too convenient.
I can only hope.
