The girl doesn't have an answer for me, looks like she hasn't thought of her name. "Well, you better come up with one then, okay? Everyone has a name, how else will I know how to call you?" I offer the girl a smile.
Ross comes over to me and uncorks the vial. "Nothing goes with drinking like a good story," he says and grins. "Tell me what happened in the other world. The one with Neptune." He takes the vial to his mouth and sips a bit. Looks like he wants more. He duplicates the potion and then looks at me, ready to listen.
I sigh. It's not a story I go back to with good memories. "Very well. Neptune was the Guardian of Water on a planet that has been long gone by now. Neptune was you. Every Guardian is immortal, they can die in one world but they'll always be present in the Universe, up until the point when Time consumes everything, every bit of matter and energy there is. That particular planet wasn't among the first planets to be able to support life, but it was among the first to use that opportunity and develop intelligent, self-aware life. Something similar to humans. As their technology advanced, they had less and less need for us, the Guardians. And then, they achieved the point where they could bend the laws of the Universe. They had, essentially, become gods, in a way. They had powers similar to ours, although they relied on their technology to produce those powers and to control those powers.
Many of the Guardians saw no problem with this, we watched over them and made sure they didn't get out of line. Some, however, felt contested. They felt as if those beings weren't made to control such powers, that it was not natural or right, at least that's what they said. I think a few were actually jealous of them, although I never understood why exactly. Anyhow, once we, the other Guardians found out what was going on, I mean, they were abducting the people and murdering them for achieving that level of technology, we decided to step in and make sure it stopped. Unfortunately, they were so blinded by their hatred that they didn't do what we asked them to do. They opened fire on us. Quite literally, actually. And we lost one of us. We lost you, Neptune.
After we gave you a good funeral, we went and put together a team to get rid of the rogue Guardians. They were too far gone to bring back, we needed to stop them on this particular planet. Permanently. But when we found them, we discovered the rogue Guardians lying on the ground, burnt, dead. The Guardian of Fire, one of the first to go rogue, had obviously killed them for some reason. He was just two miles away from that spot, and when we found him and tried to stop him, he went absolutely berserk. Fire started spewing everywhere, it was a bloody inferno. Not many of us got out alive, and that's when we decided to abandon the planet. It was a lost cause, the Guardian of Fire had done too much damage already and with you dead, we stood little chance to put the fire out and start over. The last thing we saw when we departed from the planet was flames engulfing it, the whole planet was ablaze. And that's the story," I finished and looked into Ross's eyes.
