Anyway, I'm not expecting a zombie apocalypse. I've been studying the 2012 Prophecy, and the world will "end" with an earthquake, tidal waves and fire (sounds like a nuclear holocaust to me). As I've also studied human nature (and the fact that I'm very cynical), I know that when these things happen, people will become desperate.
Mmhm. I also suggest outdoors-type clothing: poncho, raincoat, winter coat, snowpants, etc. (It will be winter, after all)

Oh darn, this means that my 2012/2013 calendar I bought was a ripoff. :(

Doesn't hurt to be prepared but I still severely doubt the world will end as there are multiple reasons for the maians to disappear and the fact that they ended on 2012 doesn't really mean anything... maybe they just stopped....

Despite the fact that I love a good conspiracy theory myself, I can't help but be reminded of the Y2K scare (and the fact that nothing happened) whenever I hear about people stockpiling things. Summers right though, it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

So, I decided not to buy the trench knife, even though I wanted it. You might call me crazy, but I am personally planning for 2012, just in case anything happens. And to get ready, I'm going to try to buy the following items:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938811&pf_rd_i=507846 (Maybe a couple of these)

Now, even if 2012 doesn't happen, I think these would be excellent items to have in my possession for any sort of disaster. Does anyone else have any suggestions for a disaster-preparedness kit?

Also, I have First Aid training (I took EMT classes and worked as a Paramedic for a little while), so I can use the First Aid kit effectively.

Don't call me crazy; I like to think of it more as "prepared"
As I went down that list I was getting more and more worried.
If you really want to survive all you need this:
It's labelled just in case you have difficulty understanding how it works

2012? Pst, I do not believe the world will end.

But - http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2003/23oct_superstorm/ -

Supposedly, a solar storm could hit us, destroy shit, take down most if not all power grids.
How long would it take before the damages were repaired and power restored? Months? Years? Decades?

Could it happen? I have no clue, possibly.. perhaps it's something third. But if such thing did happen, one would not survive without being prepared.

Also, you're looking into buying the wrong items. Depending on where you live, you'd need

  • Good enough clothes to keep you warm, at night, at winter. Without it, you'll freeze to death. You do not want this.
  • A watersuply - You'd need to clean the water through filters, activated carbon and biosandfilters, activated carbon will deplete, depending on for how long a period of time you'd need it, you might want to look into other options. - Also, you need to look into how to collect the water. Without it, you'll die. You do not want this.
  • A food supply - If possible, get yourself some cows, chickens and pigs! You'd be eating bacon and eggs, while drinking milk. Trust me, better than canned beans (Which will run out) Without food, you'll die. You do not want this.
  • Solar cells hooked up to a battery recharging device.
  • A few good and trusty flashlights.
  • Personal Defense Weapons - In case this thing happened. There would be unprepared inviduals. Some of these would, most likely, try to ensure their survival by taking your stuff. You could die without PDW's. You do not want this.
  • A fucking giant medic lab. You also want first aid kits, one you can bring with you at all times if you're away from your shelter. Just a scratch could become deadly if left untreated. You do not want this.
  • Basic tools like Damer mentioned.
  • Stuff to do - You'd want a fucking library, if that's your thing. If it's not, you'd want something else.
  • In case your food suply runs out, the animals die or the resource you've chosen slips out. Get yourself a bow. The ammunition can be reused. You want this.
That's all I could think of for now.

No, I don't think anything like this will happen. But one can't say for sure.

Here's how I'd prepare for any situation that could be disastrous:

  • Make sure I have the BSA handbook. Guys, I don't care if you hate the BSA's guts to its very end. That handbook has information that would keep you alive (e.g. how to handle things medically).
  • Make plans for a community. Don't even think that you could survive by yourself. Having a community allows society to rebuild itself. People would rely on one another. That's a capital idea, because quite frankly, not everyone is able to have the same things that would help them.
  • Know how to defend yourself. I own a baseball bat, several pocket knives, a dagger, a hatchet, and I know how to make a spear out of a simple stick of wood. If you don't know how to defend yourself, then honestly, you're screwed.
  • Have the following:
  1. Flint and steel. @EphemeralKap mentioned it as a "magnesium fire starter". That's a fancy way of naming it.
  2. First aid kit. You won't need a "giant medical lab", but you will need a stockpile of medical gear.
  3. A way to get to a store. Bicycles, go-karts, horses. Chances are that relief efforts are occurring at said stores or the stores are abandoned, and you'd be able to raid the store without legal consequences.
  4. Live near a hospital. Hospitals have massive backup generators, and can even send in large 18-wheeler trucks that have massive generators in the back.
  5. Have a map of the local area. Know your environment.
  6. If the situation is of a nuclear nature, have a Geiger counter and a radiation suit.
  7. If the situation is of a biological nature, (e.g. SCUD missiles, chemical attacks), have a gas mask and try to stay indoors.
  8. If the situation is zombies (possible, though slightly unlikely), be absolutely careful.
  9. Water. Water is the most essential component of life you will need. Stockpile on bottled water. Also, build a well at your house. Make sure said well can withstand the harshness of the conditions.

Actually the two, while similar, aren't the same thing. (and it was me, not Kap :p) A magnesium fire starter is a block of magnesium with a bar of flint attached. You scrape off some of the magnesium with a knife and use that knife to strike some sparks off the flint into the magnesium; thus making your fire starting attempt a lot more likely to be successful.

As for firearms- roll with a PDW, preferably silenced, and/or a pistol, if you get your hands on both. A bow would also be great as you can actually carve ammunition(buy a knife).

Don't get any of that sniper rifle, machine gun, assault rifle crap. You're running from people, not hiding in a fort. If they're persistant, they won't stop, and you'll be dead without mobility.
