Those of you who are oldies may remember this forum game that never actually took off. I made the original thread over a year and a half ago, but never got enough interest from others to begin it.

Now, I'd like to get people playing it.

UTOPIA: REBORN
In the year 2025, the world experienced a chaotic change. With an exponentially increasing population, the amount of housing and resources quickly dwindled. By the time 2025 came around, the population had nearly doubled from what it had been 25 years ago. The resources, already strained, could no longer satisfy an immense demand.

The first to crash was the agricultural market. With a decreasing population of farmers and an increasing population demanding food, people used to having an abundance of food were suddenly forced to ration out their food for the week. People who had already been starving continued to stave, and without the assistance of the more fortunate, died in great numbers.

The second to crash was the stock market. During the time between 2017 and 2023, the stock market experienced a great increase, nearly rivaling what it had been before the Great Depression. However, during the later months of 2024, the market crashed almost over night - causing billions of people to lose their life's savings.

Then began the riots. The crowded streets and anger over lack of housing and food led to billions of people turning against their governments. Martial law was declared in most countries, the army focusing not on the enemy, but on their own people. Riots continued for years, some without rest, until the development of the Hephaestus ExoSuit.

One of the major developments of the late 2020's, the Hephaestus was developed in the United States as a protective suit for law enforcement and military personnel. While the first versions to be used were armed with nothing but a fist and their presence, they were later armed with machine guns and grenade launchers. The Hephaestus changed the entire face of riot control, and all riots -and rioters - were quickly subdued.

The Hephaestus was quickly sold and copied by other nations to quell their own riots, some with more violent force than others, and thus the first era that can truly be called "utopia" was born. Through a show of power and force, people were kept oppressed by most governments of the world. Until the year 2035, this is the way the world worked. Though, anybody could predict that the increasing population could only increase for so much longer.

In the year 2036, another disaster struck. The human population, now hitting 20 billion, was at it's limit. Diseases, some of which were eradicated during the early 2020's, returned to ravage the population. Smallpox and tuberculosis began to quickly spread throughout apartments, crowded with people. Vaccines for smallpox, which had eliminated the disease in the 1980, were no longer effective against the mutated strain, which spread like wildfire through cities. The diseased began to outnumber the healthy, and riots again began to spark again.

By 2045, the human population had been reduced to 2.5 billion people. In some cases, the entire population of some developing countries had been killed off, leaving them nothing but a border on a map. The reduced number of enlightened individuals (such as doctors, scientists, physicists, etc.) lead to a slowed amount of progress in the scientific field. Outbreaks of smallpox and tuberculosis continued, though the reduced population helped to control spread. Nations closed their borders and cut off trade in an attempt to focus on quarantining and treating the sick population.

The end of the modern era came in the year 2047. The United States and China, the final two superpowers in the world, went to war with each other. Nobody outside of the governments knew why, nor could anybody think of a plausible reason. On May 21st, 2047, the People's Republic of China and the United States of America, along with their respective allies, launched every nuclear arm at their disposal in an attempt to destroy each other. It almost worked.

In the year 2156, survivors appeared from underground bunkers, created before the exchange, to gaze upon a very changed world. The largest of the bunker systems, located in what was once New York City, took it upon themselves to create the perfect civilization. They began to build civilization anew, calling their civilization "Sanctuary." They began to build their civilization based on a strict code of laws. Armed with the old Hephaestus suits, they were able to enforce said laws.

Opposite Sanctuary, in the Rocky Mountains, began another city: Utopia, controlled by the New Order. Built on similar laws, with a similar purpose, they were unaware of each other. While Sanctuary was built like a typical city, Utopia was built differently.

Designed to be self contained, Utopia was a city populated by skyscrapers, and surrounded by a large river, with a bridge extending over it. But the most impressive feature was a massive glass dome covering the city, enclosing the population into what would be considered a perfect state of happiness. Closed off from the outside world, they would be safe and happy. And until 2230, they were.

Sanctuary quickly began to fail for the same reason the old world did: lack of food. Whereas Utopia had a large stockpile of food, and large underground farms to support a population, limited by law. When Sanctuary made contact, and they realized what a powerful asset Utopia was, especially with it's limited military.

War was constantly waged over the resources of Utopia. Both Sanctuary and the New Order conscripted for their armies. Sanctuary favored having well-equipped, well-trained soldiers, whereas the New Order favored having many conscripted soldiers, armed with pre-war weapons. Most battles were fought the same way they were in the early 1900's - in trenches, stretching across the Midwestern United States, and little progress was made. Until 2310, when Sanctuary invaded and captured Utopia. At the same time, the New Order took control of Sanctuary, though in the end, Utopia was the ultimate prize, as it is today.

The current year is 2499, and Utopia is still in the hands of Sanctuary, now renamed to simply "Utopia." The New Order controls all land east of the Mississippi River, and Utopia all land west. Both civilizations, engaged in constant warfare, have evolved greatly from when the war started, but still remain deadlocked. Lines of control have not moved more than a few miles in any direction for 30 years, as men and women die protecting their countries.

------------------------------------------------

This game will be played one of two ways, which I will decide with help of you guys.

1. The game will be a "reaction" type game, where I post what is happening for each character, and you post how you react. This is a much simpler way and depending on my schedule, I might prefer this.

2. Players are given a certain amount of starting health (most likely 100, but may change based on class). Weapons and armor are also given values, as well as there being a certain "miss" value and cover value. When a player is shot at, I first calculate the miss chance. If the bullet misses, all other checks are ignored and the player/target takes no damage. If the miss chance check is passed, the cover check is calculated. Certain amounts of cover will have higher values, which is the check is passed, means the target takes no damage. If the cover check fails, the target is hit. Next check is weapon damage minus armor value. Anything left over is damage to your health. If weapon damage is less than armor value, no damage is taken. Certain weapons are better than others at penetrating armor, but that will be calculated differently.

Important rules:

  1. Most importantly: stupid actions will get you killed, and when you are killed, you are booted from the game. Staying in cover and not running into gunfire is going to be necessary for your survival. I will not hesitate to have you killed off if you respond to being fired upon stupidly.
  2. Second most importantly: TEAMWORK, TEAMWORK, TEAMWORK. Watch your team's back, and they'll watch yours. It will also be necessary to survive the game.
  3. You are a soldier - not a god. You will not soak up bullet after bullet, nor can you always hit a target you are aiming at. In most cases, you will miss, unless you are closer to a target who is not in cover.
  4. For the purpose of making the game more manageable, all weapons have infinite ammo (with exceptions) This does not mean you can simply fire forever. Some weapons will have to reload after one shot, some after many, which will be dictated by me telling you that your weapon is no longer loaded.
  5. Brains over brawn. As strong as you can be, nothing beats a thought out plan and organization. Like I said, acting stupidly (for example, charging into gunfire) WILL get you killed.
  6. Finally: have fun. Other than physical rules, I won't dictate many mental ones. While you begin as a soldier from a certain faction, nothing is stopping you from betraying them (other than an officer's pistol)
Equipment will be determined by me, most of it will be standard issue for your faction and job. Application format below:

Character Name:
Sex: (Will not affect abilities, but may affect the way the character is treated by others)
Age: (Be reasonable - we are all humans)
Preferred weapon: (This will be the biggest factor into which class you will be suggested. Remember, weapons chosen should be modern ones. Do not list specific weapon brands, but weapon types)
Special skills: (within reason, I will change if necessary. These are also used to determine class)
Personality and traits: (for example, "angers easily" or "is calm." This will be the final factor for deciding your class.)
Background: (If you need to confirm lore with me, please shoot me a PM)
Are you able to be active on the forums: (Yes or no, and how often you are on)

For information regarding locations, important people, factions, and equipment, refer to the next post.

---RESERVED FOR INFORMATION POST---

---Important Places---
Utopia is a city nestled within the Rocky Mountains of the central United States. It is covered in a massive glass dome, which protects it's citizens from the wasteland outside. It is currently under control of the Utopian Justice Council.
The original "Utopian" city, it is currently controlled by the New Order. It suffers from a lack of a reliable food source, it's farms too small to support the growing population. It is located in the ruins of New York City.

Class: Infiltrator
---Equipment---
M16 Assault Rifle
Description: The mass produced assault rifle used by the New Order's infantry. Many were left over from before Utopia was built, thus they are readily available. They hold 30 rounds per clip and are very effective weapons, as long as you manage to hit something.
MP5 Sub Machinegun
Description: The MP5 was used by many law enforcement and other paramilitary forces in the late 20th and early 21st century. Though it suffers from a lack of range, unlike the assault rifle used by the New Order, it also has much less recoil and is much more accurate. Each clip contains 30 bullets.
Beretta M9 Pistol
Description: A common pistol used by many law enforcement agencies, it is effective and reliable for a sidearm. Each magazine holds 15 bullets.

Glock 17 Pistol
Description: A highly reliable and effective sidearm, this pistol is also well known for it's easy handling. Each clip contains 17 bullets.

M24 Sniper Rifle
Description: A weapon used by what was once the United States, the M24 sniper weapon system was used by sniper teams to take out targets from up to a mile away. This weapon has been adopted by the New Order as the rifle of choice for their scout sniper teams. It is a bolt-action rifle with clips containing 5 rounds each.

Combat Knife
Description: A brutally effective weapon, the modern combat knife is able to easily be thrust into gaps in enemy armor or be used as a tool for survival. However, it suffers from the fact that it requires you to be next to an enemy to harm them with it. All characters are equipped with a combat knife unless otherwise told.

Machete
Description: The big brother to the combat knife, a machete is a similar bladed tool, though it is much longer and wider than a knife. Carried usually by teams of soldiers who are expected to survive in the wilderness, it is useful for chopping down anything from small trees, to brush, to limbs.

This seems like fun! Though, China is not yet a superpower, but it is close. India is also close, so the story with India instead of China would be cool! Heres some other possible superpowers for you, just some suggestions. (Russia, Brazil, India, China, and European Union) If possible, id love to play on Utopias side.

Due to the way countries such as India are already overpopulated and overcrowded, they actually were hit hardest by disease, resulting in a great decrease in population.

More information will come as players reveal it - including decisions made by players that will change the face of civilization forever.

That could also say China is gone. They have the largest population in the world.

Remember though, they were only superpowers after most of the population of the world was eliminated. Most other nations were still developing by the time disease wiped them out.

Alright, Chocfudgemud, I'll give you a choice between 2 classes:

1. Combat medic. Your job is to provide medical care to your wounded comrades, and you have the ability to revive your dead friends with a defibrillator.

2. Officer. As an officer, you provide a boost to accuracy and morale for your soldiers. You are also in charge and give them orders.

Character Name: Oscar Salek
Age: 26
Sex:Male
Preferred weapon:Assault Rifles
Special skills: Good Aim (If this is OP I'll change it)
Personality and traits: Calm yet thoughtful, does not get angry easily but is scary when he does.
Background: ( Y U change lore now I can't copy my old app :c )
Born in Utopia during the Sanctuary war some years before Utopia got driven out to the west.
He's 5'8", not too tall but not small either; His skin is tanned, even though his work is mostly logistical as agricultural supervisor he still has to go do fieldwork, hence the tan. He's a bookworm, fascinated by pre 2020 books, this doesn't keep him from working out though and he's in a fairly decent shape, slightly ripped.

He was part of the New Order incursion on Sanctuary the moment they captured it, only to find out that the latter had taken his homeland instead.

He does not feel hate for the Sanctuary members, now called Utopians apparently, he just disagrees with both parties for failing to reach some sort of agreement in a world where most humanity has been wiped out and they choose to bring even more death.
He is loyal to the New Order for now but he'll follow whoever brings him back to the peaceful life in his homeland.

He has combat training as everyone else but not too much experience in it.

Only thing that I'd change about your application, Omar, is that Utopia wasn't "driven out" per se; they took over Utopia, which is considered a better city, so they have no problem leaving Sanctuary.

Essentially, Utopia is something like the gold rush where everybody wants to own it, and all of it's assets (working farms, defensive position, etc). Sanctuary, while workable, is nowhere near as great as Utopia.

Better. The New Order were the original builders and owners of Utopia, but were driven out by Sanctuary at the same time they captured Sanctuary. Sanctuary renamed themselves to "Utopia" and the New Order attempted to retake Utopia, which is where the story begins.

Wow, this looks good!
Character Name: Michael Cunningham
Sex: Male
Age: 23
Preferred Weapon: Any Sniper Rifle.
Special Skills: Wilderness Survival, and Cooking Ability (You laugh now, but watch it come in handy)
Personality/Traits: Good under pressure, prefers to lie low when faced with a challenging situation.
Background: Born in the East, his family was a member of what used to be the Great City of Utopia in the Rocky Mountains. He and his people are left with only the former town of Sanctuary to survive off of. Due to the fact that hunting is greatly needed, he goes on month-long hunting parties, where he has learned how to survive and cook for his people. His father tells stories of the War against Sanctuary, how there was a great switch-up, where the Utopians were driven to Sanctuary, and the Sanctuarians were driven to Utopia. He is a fairly mellow person, but deep down, he has a rage, a desire to take back the glorious city of Utopia from the sinful Sanctuarians.

Don't worry, this game will still happen.

I'm hoping to get at least 2 more people, to ensure it stays interesting.

Also, to help people decide, I'll give you the pros and cons of both sides:

The New Order:
Pros -
  • Can easily summon a large force of soldiers to defend positions.
  • Specializes in raw power when it comes to their vehicles.
  • Use chemical weapons on a large scale, which can be crippling to an enemy force. All New Order soldiers are issued gas masks.
  • Have the best trained commando force in the world. New Order commandos are genetically altered supersoldiers, giving them advantages over other infantry and some vehicles.
  • Have access to powerful artillery units and aircraft.
Cons -
  • Most infantry are hastily trained, and thus are less accurate than most Utopian infantry.
  • Vehicles are much slower and less versatile than Utopian vehicles.
  • Supersoldier commandos are hard and expensive to create, so there are only a few of them.
  • The lack of proper training for basic infantry leads to low morale.
Utopia:
Pros -
  • Most infantry is much better equipped and trained than New Order soldiers, meaning they are more effective at fighting.
  • Troops have better morale than New Order infantry. Most infantry counts as an officer unit, increasing morale of nearby soldiers.
  • Has access to exoskeleton units, which are can fit more roles and are much more agile than New Order tanks.
  • Their commando units are fielded more than New Order commando units are.
  • Control Utopia.
Cons -
  • Soldiers require longer training periods, meaning there are less of them on the battlefield at any given time.
  • Lack in airpower.
  • Exoskeletons are no match for New Order tanks in a toe-to-toe fight.
  • Lack supersoldier units outside of Utopia itself, meaning that none of their infantry can win in a one on one fight against them.

Wait, let me make sure I'm still straight on this (I'm balancing a Mafia game along with this.)

Chocfudgemud aka Franklin Kay is most likely a footman/scout-type soldier sided with Utopia
Omar_Sales aka Oscar Salek is most likely a heavy rifleman or footman sided with New Order, but he could switch with a simple bribe
crafter aka Darrel Chills is most likely a spy/reconnaissance soldier who has no written background so far, so we don't know his loyalties.
brownlee123 aka Michael Cunningham is most likely a sniper who goes it alone sided with New Order
