Nothing was going according to plan.
A simple reconnaissance mission, and nothing more.
I was supposed to be in, and out of that apartment flat quickly, and quietly. I just couldn't afford another wasted minute...
My supplies were just too low...
And yet... A voice in the back of my mind; that simple voice of humanity, was whispering its soft melody.
With a face hidden in shadow by the light of my hood, my identity shielded,
I had brandished my old pickaxe in my right hand.
I had taken a step toward the young girl.
"Who are you, and what are you doing here." I scowled.
However, the girl seemed incapable of speech, standing still, an expression as pale as that of a ghost.
I clenched my fist in frustration at the situation.
And yet again, my plans would seemingly change for the worse; at least, in that single, initial spark.
A terrible gunshot ran out across, what felt like miles of the desolate city; a shockwave of echos showing just how truly pitiful this ruin of civilization had truly become...
I swore under my breath...
Whoever had used that pistol must have been out to kill us, known we had been there, it was all a set-up;
For with that single gunshot... I knew we would soon be swarmed by the marauding hordes of Walkers from the streets below.
Before I took my action, I started deeply into the young girls eyes; a mix of fear and emotion could be seen in her face.
"She seems lost, and scared. She probably won't be as dangerous as that other man, whom I had seen running back into the distance toward another roll of apartments; I could take her down..."
I shook my head. "She seems unarmed," I had told myself.
I was torn; and yet, I knew time was running short.
Darting toward the girl, I yelled,
"THIS WAY!."
I gripped the girls wrist and ran back up into the stairwell.
My Destination: The top apartment of that block.
The building was not safe any longer
... But at least on the upper floors, no Walker could make it up the stairwell;
and whoever who had fired that shot, or any other bandit or survivor, would not find us.
I ran, dragging her behind me.
I didn't know what to expect from this girl.
I didn't quite know myself what I was doing.
However,my destiny was somehow intertwined with that girls in that single, crucial moment.
I didn't know...
In fact.
I would never know... What was in store...
In this Apocalyptic future.
